Gasoline Engines Versus Diesel Engines
Both diesel and gasoline engines transform the chemical energy in fuel to mechanical energy to make your vehicle run.
In gasoline engines, spark plugs ignite a mixture of compressed fuel and air, creating the force needed to move the pistons connected to the crankshaft, which in turn creates the motion necessary to turn your wheels and move your vehicle forward.
For more information on how this process occurs, check out this blog post.
With diesel engines, on the other hand, the process is a little different – the air itself is first compressed to create heat which, when mixed with fuel, causing the ignition. This process makes diesel engines better for heavy duty projects and frequent use because they’re more fuel efficient and emit less greenhouse gasses.
Diesel engines are more specialized than gasoline engines and, as such, they require more specialized training on the part of the mechanic. That’s why an Idaho Falls diesel mechanic is such an invaluable member of any auto repair shop team.
Gasoline Mechanics Versus Diesel Mechanics
Gasoline mechanics work on those vehicles that people typically drive every day – your car, your van, and your pickup truck; they perform those straightforward – and sometimes not-so-straightforward – repairs on the parts and systems of personal vehicles.
Not only that, but they also usually have a lot of electrical and computer systems they need to work on, as modern vehicles have become more electronically complex.
Diesel mechanics, on the other hand, specialize in large trucks, busses, and sometimes industrial equipment, working with systems and parts that are unique to diesel engines. They typically don’t have to worry about complicated computer systems that you’d typically find in your average gasoline car or truck.
